GS-FITNESS / CORE BOOT CAMP ” GARDEN CITY DASH ” SATURDAY JULY 14TH IN NEWTON CTR.

Rain date is Saturday July 21st.  We just got done with our May version of the ” Garden City Dash ” in Newton CTR just a short couple of weeks ago.  We are prepping for our next installment on Saturday July 14th.  The stations were challenging, the weather was great and the smiles on people’s faces after were almost impossible to rub off.

Here is one of the stations participants had to negotiate through, the kettlebell/rope pull.  20 reps were required by each person on each team before they could move on to the next station.  One rope had a 45lb weight for males and then there were two 30lbers for females to use.

Here is another one of the more challenging stations.  The sand bag/hill run.  Participants from each team were expected to run up the hill 3 times with the bag on the right shoulder, 3 on the left, and 4 holding it out across your chest for a total of 10 reps.  This was tough.  Again, the team could not move to the next station until everyone on their team finished the station.

One more here to temp your tummies, the wheelbarrow carry.  I did not measure the distance but it was at least 70-75 yards one way, and people were required to carry it down and back for a total of 150 yards.  There was 70lbs on each wheelbarrow.  I wish I was a better cameraman, but I only got the last few steps of this great effort!

There were many more stations teams had to tackle in this great event we held at 69 Tyler Terrace, The Newton CTR Playground.  These event are run through the GS-Fitness / CORE Boot Camp program who works in conjunction with the Newton Recreation Department.  This is our more local version of the Warrior, Spartan or Tough Mudder races; minus the mud, barbed wire and beer.

Check us out at www.newtonambootcamp.com These ” Garden City Dashes ‘ are a great way to prepare for these other events.

GS-FITNESS / CORE BOOT CAMP: FITNESS SCAVENGER HUNT.

You’ve seen Survivor on TV?  You’ve seen Fear Factor and the MTV Challenges?  But you’ve never seen the CORE Boot Camp fitness scavenger hunt.  BOOM!  Here is the low down:  Two teams of 6 players competed against each other to gather the most fitness equipment.  The team with the most fitness equipment/poundage won the competition.  The playing field was a (just under) a half mile around playground.  Kettle bells, dumb bells, water bags, battling ropes and medicine balls were scattered all over this field.  The object was for each team to collect the most equipment in pounds.  There were a couple of stipulations:

1.  Each team had to travel as one unit.  Meaning, the team couldn’t separate and gather multiple pieces of equipment at once, they had to travel together without leaving each other’s sides.

2.  Each team could only collect one item at a time.

So, after 30 minutes of running between 100-300 yards out and back, it became the survival of the fittest.  A test of endurance.

Here are the team’s respective piles of equipment they had assembled after about 45 minutes of action.

Here we have a team working very nicely together to score some very good points by picking a 40 lb water bag and returning it to their pile.  Nice score team!

More good team work as this team decides to carry a 70lb sled, as opposed to dragging or pushing like it is intended to be.

As we have seen, team work was a big theme of the day for our competitors.  Here the ladies do a nice job bringing a battling rope in from about 300 yards out.

Lastly, we see the competition taking it’s toll.  This is one of the last runs in and you can see fatigue setting in.

We do one event like this each month between the months of April and November.  An event that is outside of the normal exercise class format that really challenges people physically while providing a fun atmosphere.

It’s all good clean fitness fun!

GS-FITNESS / CORE BOOT CAMP SUPER BOWL INSPIRED WORKOUT PART II

I won’t so far to say this is a ” core stability” exercise.  That would be kind of silly on my part.  But, it did serve as a nice 5 minute fun break in the action for the group.  Can’t always be serious, got to have a little fun from time to time.

GS-FITNESS: TOP 5 WAYS TO AVOID WEIGHT GAIN OVER THE NEXT 4 DAYS.

1. Don’t celebrate Thanksgiving… Just kidding.

1. Don’t overeat! Sounds too obvious and maybe even ridiculous, but the truth is it works. Grazing is the best method. Instead of ingesting large amounts of calories for 2-3 hours straight break it up into small meals scattered over the same amount of time. Practice push ups by pushing yourself away from the table when you feel full.
2. Substitute common unhealthy ingredients for healthier options. Instead of vegetable oil and shortening try olive oil when possible. Sub in margarine for butter, white flours for whole wheat flours.
3. Increase exercise leading up to holiday. Design your program starting one month prior to holiday and have intensity increase steadily up until the celebratory feeding frenzy. This will increase lean muscle mass and boost metabolism.
4. Serve more protein, fiber and healthy fat dense foods to satisfy hunger. Add avocado to your salad for a great healthy fat that curbs hunger. Raw vegetables and homemade hummus are a great appetizer option. Sweet potatoes have a much higher nutrient value than their white counterpart.
5. If you live in the Newton area come take the Post Thanksgiving Day workout Extravaganza at 69 Tyler Terrace in Newton Center. Weather men are calling for 60 degree weather. We have a great workout planned consisting of sled dragging, wheel barrow pushing, medicine ball throwing and metabolism boosting exercise.
